Moving and storing tips

  1. Mark Boxes with contents and to where in the house items belong.  Use suitcases to full potential, fill them with clothes or other items.  Create an open first box with all of the things you need upon arrival; Medications, toiletries, linens, garbage bags, towels ect. Make sure this box this box is that last thing packed and also make sure tools for assembling beds and other items are easy to retrieve.
  2. Two weeks before moving day contact your telephone, electric, gas cable, refuse and water compnaies to set up date services will be discontinued.
  3. Appliances such as refrigerators and freezers should be thoroughly dry and clean. Keep the door slighly ajar. A deoderizer placed inside the refrigerator or freezer will help to maintain freshness. Don't place items inside the refrigerator or freezer as the shelves and lining can be easily marked.
  4. Furniture such as wardrobes and dressers should be empty to protect the shelving and structure of the item. Where possible remove the legs from the furniture.
  5. Dishes and glassware should be wrapped individually. Place a layer of packing material inside the bottom and top of boxes. Fill any gaps between the cartons with packing material. Label all cartons "fragile" and avoid storing heavy items on top of them.
  6. Mirrors/Windows/screen/Pictures should be protected by packing material such as bubble-wrap or in a flat-pack carton. Store them on their edges in an upright position.
  7. Metal items should be wrapped in non-acid tissue paper or plastic bags to help reduce tarnishing. Wipe chrome or cast iron with a little machine oil to help retard rust.
  8. Electrical items should be packed in the original boxes or a bubble- wrap and good quality cartons. Seal the top.
  9. Battery operated appliances and toys need to have the batteries removed.
  10. Computers need special care. The original boxes are highly recommedned. However bubble-wrap and good quality cartons will do the job. If strong for longer then 6 months consult your owners manual or your retailer.
  11. Mowers and other machinerey should be drained of all fuel and oil.
  12. Planning your storage space; place large, heavy items that you can stack upon at the back of the space. Those items that you might need to access often place in the front of the space.
